A view of downtown Bear River at high tide

A common sight around the Bear River of my youth were teams of Oxen.  They were a favourite means of draught animal of the many German-descended farmers who predominated the agricultural scene around Bear River.  I remember often seeing farmers leading pairs of young oxen on the road in front of our house as they were being trained to work and pull as a team.  People from all over Canada buy trained teams of oxen from Bear River.

At the Digby County exhibition (which is situated in Bear River),  in the Autumn, contests were held to determine which teams could pull the most weight.   There were scores of teams and not always did the largest animals win.    Also on the schedule were many teams of draught horses and their pulling contests.

Another view of Bear river when the tide is out. Once, saw mills lined its shores.

Terraced streets and acres of Red Oak, Maple and Cherry trees make the "Switzerland of Nova Scotia" unique.
